JOHN KNOX by Simonetta Carr

This book is written for a  preteen to early teen audience and introduces children to an important person in church history by the name of John Knox. There is a lot of history, historical pictures, and theology in this book which makes it a wonderful educational tool as well. With so much religious freedom in  our country today, it may be hard to comprehend that for John  Knox standing up for truth was not the easiest or safest choice. Indeed, for a period of 19 months John Knox was sentenced to hard labor on a ship used for war. John Knox grew up in Scotland and was a reformer whose passion still influences our thinking today. He was in the audience of kings and queens of the day. There is a lot of action in this book  to keep its readers engaged. Once started, this book is a hard book to put down until read from cover to cover.

CAPTIVATED by Thabiti M. Anyabwile

This book encourages us to stop at the foot of the cross and let the work of the cross move from our heads to our hearts. The author gives reasons why there can be no other way to the Father’s forgiveness but through the Cross. In Matt. 27:27-46 we hear Jesus cry out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” as judgment was meted out. Because He was obedient to death on the Cross, the author devotes a whole chapter to the fact that the power of death has been destroyed for believers. Each chapter has questions at the end to help its reader reflect on the mystery of Jesus death and resurrection… the wise it is foolish…but to believers it is the power of God unto salvation. The ground is level at the foot of the Cross and a line is drawn in the sand. Each person has a choice to faith to receive the atonement for sin made there or to walk away unmoved.

This is a timely book to read now as we are approaching the Easter season. To stop and gaze at the Cross and the mystery therein contained is time well spent. This book will give its reader truths to consider as they reflect on what Easter is all about.

Eternity Changes Everything by Stephen Witmer

t is so good to be reminded of where we are heading and the effect it should have on us. When listening to the evening news or reading the morning newspaper, the message of this book should be the filter it all passes through. For those of us who have trusted Jesus and are confident we will be with Him forever, that joy breaks into our present. This godly confidence lets us know that all things are working for our good. Even the hard stuff is preparing us for eternity. We are moving toward our final goal. We can be restless here knowing we are just passing through on our way to our real home. This book helps us push the reset button and re-calibrate our priorities and attitudes in light of eternity. This book has about 120 pages, but you will not want to put it down. For anyone needing encouragement, this book hits the bull’s eye.

Spiritual Warfare by Borgman and Ventura

I chose to give this book 5 stars because of how practical and “hands on” it was. I better understood the battlefield we stand on and how to use the weapons of warfare God has given us. Satan is prowling about seeking someone to devour by using the world, flesh, and devil. We are admonished to recognize our weaknesses and God’s great strength. Each piece of our armor is fully discussed along with the part it plays in our standing and resisting the enemy. Each chapter ends with discussion questions to help us determine where we may need to realign ourselves for victory. I will keep this book close by for future reference as it is just that practical and helpful.

This book was so compelling that I read it in one sitting. There are 11 different stories from all walks of life of people wanting more than they were getting in their Catholic upbringing. What is amazing is that for many of them their answers began coming after someone witnessed to them about Jesus and invited them to Bible studies. We never know what seeds we might be sowing. Being a seeker of more of God myself although not Catholic, I can identify with them. God is so inexhaustible that I feel I will always be seeking Him and wanting more and more and more. What these 11 former Catholics discovered was that salvation was a gift, not based on their works. They were liberated and I rejoice with them. I believe there are many saved people in the Catholic church, but if you know someone in the Catholic church and you are wondering if they know what it means to be born again, this is the perfect book to ask them to consider reading.

Review of the book Life in Christ by Jeremy Walker

I would like to recommend this book to anyone struggling to find victory in their walk with Christ. My very favorite verse Mr. Walker explains is II Cor. 5:17 “Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” A better rendering of the English translation, he says, would be “The old has gone and is gone for good; the new has come and keeps on coming.” We have changed sides!!! This book is all about knowing who we are in Christ, and living life from that perspective. We are sons of God, and Mr. Walker goes on to explain from Scripture the marks of God’s children and how we are a work in progress. There are questions at the end of each chapter which helps the reader apply what he has read to his own thought process and life.

Review of AWAKENING FAITH written by James Stuart Bell

This review is from: Awakening Faith: Daily Devotions from the Early Church (Hardcover)

This is a wonderful daily devotional featuring excerpts from 69 of the early church fathers, many of whom I had never heard of before. There is also a Bible verse for each day that goes along with the devotional. The writings of the early church fathers have a seriousness that is lacking today. These writers were committed to Scripture and did not let the world around them convince them otherwise. I appreciate their unwavering faith. This devotional is a call to return to the faith of our fathers. You will be encouraged in your faith by the book Awakening Faith.
